What are Sealants?
Sealants can help to protect your teeth from decay and deep staining. They are clear protective coatings applied to the back teeth. This area may be difficult for some patients to keep clean, especially if the teeth have deep grooves and fissures. Sealants can last for about one to three years before reapplication may be necessary.
Why are Sealants necessary?
Sealants are most often applied to pediatric teeth as a way to protect vulnerable baby teeth. Kids don’t always have the best hygiene and eating habits, so sealants can prevent these teeth from becoming decayed. However, there is no age limit when it comes to having sealants placed over your teeth. Even adults can benefit from the sealant process.
Who is a candidate for Sealants?
We can examine your teeth to determine if sealants are right for you. The procedure is easy and quick in our office, and it can be done in conjunction with other treatments. Depending on the amount of wear that your sealants receive, they can last anywhere from one to about three years. You and your children can benefit from the protective power of sealants.
What happens during the Sealant process?
We start by cleaning and drying the back teeth. Liquid sealant is brushed over the biting surfaces of the back teeth only. The sealant is then cured into place with a bright light. This ensures that it is in place and isn’t able to be washed or brushed away. We can check on the sealants at each of your upcoming checkup appointments. The sealants can be replaced just as easily once they begin to wear away and are no longer offering you the protection that you both want and need for your smile.
